School Mental Health / Child Protection Policy For Parents’ Compliance

Parents are important  members of the school community and can have a  significant positive or negative  influence on  child safety  and  the general psychological climate of a  school.   It is a known fact that no one can give what they do not have.  Only happy teachers  can make learners happy.   It is important to ensure that teachers and other school personnel experience the level of psychological  safety they require to function effectively in carrying out their duties of  teaching and caring for the learners.  It is also important that  learners are protected from errors  of their own  parents as well as actions of  other parents that could potentially harm them either physically or emotionally.  Likewise, it is important to protect the mental health of parents from  behaviours of other parents that could negatively affect their  dignity and sense of safety within the school premises.  Hence the following rules.

  • Direct Confrontation of Teachers or Other School Personnel   by Parents– Parents are encouraged to report   observations of concern or grievances to the management through the admin   for appropriate intervention.   It is prohibited for parents to confront teachers or other school personnel   on any matter involving the school, whether within or outside the school premises.
  • Verbal Abuse of School Staff or Other Child – Parents are reminded that making derogatory remarks about teachers or other adults generally in the presence of their children can make them to develop disrespectful attitude to adults, and  consequently have lifelong  negative effects on their personalities.   Verbal  abuse  of  school personnel  or other children  by parents is  therefore prohibited.
  • Physical Assault on  School Staff or Other Child – Physical assault  on a  child ,   teacher  or other school personnel  or threats by parents  either within or outside the school premises is prohibited and will attract legal actions.
  • Direct Confrontation of Other Child or Parent – Parents are not allowed to confront another child or another parent  on any matter involving the school  within or outside the school premises.  All complaints should be presented to the management for appropriate intervention.  Where a meeting between the parents of  learners in a conflict  is necessary, such a meeting shall be organised   and  coordinated  by the management.
  • Unwholesome Relationship with Staff – Parents are discouraged from  having  any  informal relationship with teachers or other school personnel that could compromise  the required formal relationship expected between school staff and parents.
  • Requesting Teachers or Other School Staff to Provide Child Care Services Outside the School Premises.  All childcare arrangements eg after school care arrangement, must be  made with the management and must be delivered within the school premises.  The school will not be accountable for any such arrangement outside the school premises or its outcome.
  • Sending Someone Else to Pick Your Child or Deliver Food or Other Edible Items to  Them –  Parents are to pick up their children and bring  their food  themselves or  delegate someone who must be introduced  physically to the HOD in charge of the section.  Any  arrangement   for  someone else to  pick the child or deliver edible items to the child must be done by a written instruction addressed to the HOD  by the parent  and the new person
  • must be introduced physically to the HOD prior to the date.  Where these conditions are not met by the parent, such requests will not be granted, and it is for the good of the child.
  • Sending sick children to the school with or without medication. Sick children  should be kept at home for adequate medical care  until they are well enough to participate actively in learning activities before resumption to school.  Any child with observable symptoms of illness or disease shall  be sent back home from the gate.
  • Leaving children in school late. Any child who is not picked within one hour after closing will be handed over to the nanny for after school care at a fee per hour.  Please, note that the day care closes by 5:00pm.
  • Possession or Use of Psychoactive Substances – Bringing or using psychoactive substances within the school premises is prohibited.   The penalty for default is expulsion of the  parent’s child.
